FAQ

What vaccinations will my pet require?

Dogs - We require a current C5 Vaccine (at least 2 weeks prior if they are more than 12 months overdue) which covers Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo Virus, Bordetella and strains of Canine Parainfluenza (Canine Cough). Please keep in mind the Canine Cough vaccination is compulsory even though it does not cover all strains of the virus. We require your pets’ vaccination certificate on arrival or prior and every 12 months when it is updated. If your dogs paperwork says C3 & KC, this is equivalent to a C5. Please be aware, even though some C3 vaccinations are valid for 3 years the Canine Cough booster still needs to be updated yearly.

Cats - We require a current F3 vaccination minimum (at least 2 weeks prior if they are overdue). This protects against Feline Enteritis, Feline Calici Virus & Feline Rhinotracheitis. We require your pets’ vaccination certificate on arrival or prior and every 12 months when it is updated. If you cat has Feline Aids, please contact us to discuss boarding options.

What is Canine Cough?

Kennel or Canine Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis) is the common cold for dogs. It is a highly contagious upper respiratory disease that is an airborne virus. Symptoms can include a gagging cough, sneezing, and nasal discharge. These symptoms can last from a few days to a few weeks. While canine cough is hard for owners to live with and annoying for your dog, it is not a serious disease, though it can lower a dog’s immune system, making it more susceptible to other infections.

Even in the most hygienic, well ventilated, spacious kennels the possibility of a dog acquiring Canine Cough exists. As Canine Cough is an airborne virus it can be acquired from any dog, whether it be your neighbours, a dog in the park or your best friends. It can even be acquired while at the vets. No amount of supervision or sanitation can prevent a dog from catching the virus.

All dogs must also be immunised to Canine Cough before staying at Appletree. The C5 vaccination does not cover every strain of canine cough. It is like receiving a flu or COVID vaccination, you may still contract the virus, but the symptoms should be less than if you were not vaccinated.

Do I still have to pay for the next day if I pick up early?

Yes, our rates are a daily rate, and you are charged for each calendar day your pet is with us, irrelevant of the time you pick up or drop them off.

What will you feed my pet?

We feed Dogs Advance Dry food products as well as fresh chicken mince, rice & veggies. We also have chicken or beef dog roll. We usually feed all the dogs in the morning & a second meal is offered in the evening if you usually feed your dogs twice a day.

This is all included in your daily boarding fee.

Can we bring our own bedding, toys or food?

Outside of our peak periods, you are welcome to bring along bedding and toys, but at your own risk. All houses have a hessian sack bed and we have plenty of extra warm blankets for winter.

If your dog requires special food prescribed by a vet you can certainly bring it along, as long as it is clearly labelled with your pet’s name and instructions.

Appletree holds itself up to a very high standard of hygiene, and strives every day to ensure each and every dog is at their healthiest. This is done by the strict adherence of the daily cleaning and disinfecting of all houses, as well as the ventilation system to minimise airborne contamination. Dogs are also inspected for illness each day, so any signs of sickness will be quickly attended to by the professionals on staff or by the vet you have specified.

The dog houses are hosed out and cleaned every morning with disinfectant. The cats houses have new litter everyday and are mopped on departure. If the cat is with us longer than 5 days, then their bedding is changed every 5 days.

Are the dog and cat houses shared?

No, all dogs and cats have their own house, unless they are from the same family, then sharing is allowed.
